New Max informal settlement shacks blow away
Resident fears for her community and the safety of children and families.
NTHABISENG MNISI from Max informal settlement writes:
I need help regarding the shacks they are constructing at Max informal settlement.
The type of corrugated iron they are using is very weak and unsafe. Many of the shacks that were built were blown away by the wind. The same incident happened again on Saturday when it was raining.
Last week a guy was taken to hospital because he was injured. We have spoken to our community leader but it seems as if he is also not sure who the construction guy is. My community and I are worried about the safety of children and families.

Temba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, replies:
The City has a service provider that is reconstructing the burnt shacks to accommodate the displaced residents. The instruction to perform work (IPW) issued to the service provider is according to the tender specification.
The City has requested the residents to stay away from the construction site as it may be dangerous during construction.
So far the service provider has completed construction of about 200 shacks and they have survived the winds that occurred.
The service provider did indicate there was an incident where strong winds had blown down some shacks that were left incomplete for the night. They were blown down due to the fact that they were not complete with no door or window panes at the time.
To prevent incidents that may lead to injuries of residents, the City requests everyone to stay away from the construction site until such time that it allocates shacks to rightful beneficiaries.
