Feed a hungry child this holiday
Each food parcel costs R35 and the number of children supported in each school ranges from 11 to 85.
Operation Antifreeze started its annual Christmas hamper drive to collect non-perishable foods for distribution in December.
Operation Antifreeze is a non-profit organisation that has been reaching out to those less fortunate in our community the past 19 years.
“We saw the huge need in our community and felt compelled to get involved and to make a difference. We run school projects where we support 11 schools by providing 542 food parcels monthly to children who have been identified by teachers as coming from very poor households,” said Hilary Carhart, project coordinator and fund-raiser.
“We also supply spreads such as peanut butter, jams and mayonnaise, as well as fruit and vegetables when possible, to the schools to help them provide lunch for these children. For some of the children the meal they get at school is the only meal they will have for the day.
“Many of these children do not eat from the Friday when they leave school until the Monday when they return to school. A hungry child cannot concentrate or study and is thus unable to reach his or her full potential,” said Carhart.
School holidays are a hard time for these children as they do not receive their lunch from their school. The hampers collected will be given to these school children in December before the schools close to ensure they have food to eat during the school holidays.
“We need both companies and individuals to open their hearts, get involved to help us to reach our target and to share some Christmas spirit with those less fortunate.
“We are also trying to find individuals or companies to sponsor food parcels for the schools we support each month. Each food parcel costs R35 and the number of children supported in each school ranges from 11 to 85.”
The need in schools has increased drastically and continues to increase beyond what Operation Antifreeze is able to cope with. At the moment they are only able to provide one basic food parcel a month, which is not enough.
Sponsoring a school would allow them to provide a second, more substantial food parcel each month.
They can issue tax deductible donation receipts for any monetary donations. For more information, contact Hilary on 072 959 7242 or at antifreeze@mweb.co.za
