Oom Fred turns 74 on his street corner

Three years ago, Oom Fred West said he was retiring from standing on a street corner begging.

This never happened, and, today (November 8), he celebrated his 74th birthday on his corner at Elgin Road and Olienhout Street in Birchleigh.

Motorists driving past saw him dishing out cake to anyone who happened to pass by.

Kempton Express wrote about Oom Fred, as he is known by many, in November 2016, when he announced his official retirement from begging.

At the time he said: “I’ll return to my traffic light from time to time if it is really necessary, but for now Roy and I can relax for a while and just be happy.”

He had been standing in the same spot for 15 years now.
