A weekend of load shedding looms as Eskom battles on

Customers are urged to use electricity sparingly.

After Thursday night’s late night stage 2 load shedding, Eskom is still battling to keep the lights on today.

Stage 2 load shedding was implemented from 10pm on Thursday night to 5am on Friday morning.

Although Eskom has not implemented any load shedding on Friday morning, the power utility has warned that load shedding for the latter part of the day remained a high probability. An update will be given later today, Eskom said.

While the system remains extremely vulnerable, the overnight load shedding assisted with partial recovery of emergency resources to enable Eskom to get through Friday morning.

“We will need to continue to replenish both our water levels at pumped storage schemes and diesel for our open cycle gas turbines over the weekend in order to place us in a better position to stabilise for the week ahead.”

Unplanned breakdowns are still above 10 500MW. Eskom’s technical teams are working tirelessly to return units from planned and unplanned maintenance and to replenish emergency reserves.
