SheIsBrave hosts GBV dialogue at Ivory Park hall

Gender-based violence is one of the most sensitive topics

SheIsBrave hosted a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness session at Ivory Park North Hall on October 26.

The session was attended by community members, mainly the youth, who used the hashtag #HeforShe on social media during the event. SheIsBrave is a non-profit organisation that aims to empower and mentor young people through monthly empowerment events and sessions that are themed, outreach programmes at schools, motivational school drives and mentorship programmes.

SheIsBrave founder Amanda Nomnqa said the main objective of the session was to raise awareness, educate, empower and inform the community by engaging, discussing and sharing possible solutions to these social issues. There were some individuals, as well as guest speakers, such as Thabisile Bothelezi, known as DJ ThabiThabs, who shared their personal experiences.

“Gender-based violence is one of the most sensitive topics and one of the events that is not particularly attended because of the stigma around it. When people see or hear about such violence they already conclude that it’s women who suffer.

“We also try to help and educate people about the misconception around this issue because such violence does not discriminate. It’s both men and women who have to break the silence because once it is broken, there is a way forward,” said Nomnqa.

Nomnqa also said that the session was successful because they had a great audience that participated in the dialogues that the NPO had planned.

“The event was very effective. We look forward to having more of these safe-space sessions that educate and empower the youth because when we know better, we do better.

“Sadly, GBV is increasing daily and it needs our attention. We need to put an end by making a noise about it,” said Nomnqa.
