Gauteng leaders resolve to expand Edenvale Hospital

The Premier's spokesperson urged people to go to hospitals by referral only.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura resolved to expand Edenvale Hospital and recommission Kempton Hospital after a surprise visit to Edenvale on October 16.

According to Vuyo Mhaga, the premier’s spokesperson, the surprise visit to Edenvale Hospital was as a result of members of the community complaining about the long queues at the public hospital.

Makhura and MEC for Health in Gauteng Bandile Masuku conducted the surprise visit together.

They were seen engaging and reassuring patients and staff who raised their concerns to them as they walked around the hospital.

Makhura stated that the hospital’s old design was a challenge.

“It attends to 30 000 patients per annum. Plans are currently in place to improve the hospital whilst it functions optimally.”

According to Mhaga, Makhura found that the hospital struggled to provide services to the high number of patients.

“The hospital was congested but relatively clean, and the staff was working hard under the circumstances.

“The resolution made was that more land will be bought to expand the health-care facility,” said Mhaga.

To reduce the demand in the hospital, community members were urged to go to clinics as a primary point of call, instead of hospitals.

The premier’s spokesperson urged people to go to the hospital by referral only.

Other plans mentioned by the Gauteng leaders was the digitisation of the filing system in hospitals.

Hospitals will do away with manual administration and e-filing systems will be used, according to the spokesperson.

In addition, Mhaga said new x-ray machines have been purchased to help the people of Edenvale and surrounding areas as well.

“The Premier has identified health as one of the challenges faced by the people of Gauteng. This is part of the premier’s call to have an activist government in the sixth administration.”

During the visit, Masuku said he was fully aware of the complaints and is determined to make a change.

Masuku’s office was contacted for further comment before October 25.

No comment was received at the time of going to print.
