Rare and valuable stamps to go on auction in Midrand

Printed auction catalogues will be available at the venue.

Rare and valuable stamps and other philatelic material will go under the hammer on November 19 at Kyalami Country Club.

The auction, consisting of over 700 lots, has a pre-sale estimate of R1,2 million.

Five imperforate Colour Trials of the South African 1913-24 King George V King’s Head issue are all expected to exceed their R15 000 estimated sales prices.

Among the many gems on offer are: Great Britain 1855 Queen Victoria 2d Blue mint; Great Britain 1929 King George V PUC £1 mint; South Africa 1913-24 King George V King’s Head issue, various corner Plate no pairs including the 5/-value and the 10/- value; and South Africa 1913-24 King George V King’s Head £1 value mint.

Rare errors include: Rhodesia 1966 Independence Overprint 2/6d value with MISSING VERMILLION colour used and South West Africa 1974 Rock Paintings 5c value with MISSING BLACK printing mint.

Other stamps of special interest are: Swaziland 1889-90 10/- value mint with certificate; Swaziland 1961 Decimal overprint, 50c type III corner control pair mint (one of only 3 known); and USA 1846 New York Postmaster’s Provisional 5c pair used on cover.

Cape Town based Ken Joseph has returned to Joburg after an absence of over 30 years to host this event. Ken, along with his team from philatelic friends boast over 80 years of experience in the philatelic field.

Says Ken, “We are very excited about bringing an auction to Gauteng, for the first time in many years. It’s been a goal we have been striving towards and by returning to my roots, it feels like we have to a large extent come full circle.”

All are welcome, entrance and parking is free. Viewing will be from 8am to 2.30pm and the auction will take place from 3pm to 6pm, with a dinner break from 6pm to 7pm, followed by a second session from 7pm to about 9pm.
