Second drowning at AfriCaren Inn in Rhodesfield in four weeks

Harmon told Express the first incident was not a drowning but that poison was involved.

About four weeks after the drowning incident at AfriCaren Inn in Rhodesfield in October, another drowning was reported at the guest house on November 3.

Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson Capt Jethro Mtshali said: “We can confirm that police have opened an inquest docket to establish the cause of death of Skhumbuzo Magubane (40) after police were summoned to the establishment at about 5.10pm.”

German tourist Rolf Schmidt, who was booked in at AfriCaren Inn with his girlfriend over the said weekend, said: “We arrived at 4pm and while eating, I saw how a guy in the pool held an arm in his hand.

“As I stood up I saw an unconscious person being pulled from the water, so I immediately ran to help.”

Schmidt said the ambulance arrived at about 5.30pm.

“The man was declared dead.” He said before the incident he saw Magubane with friends or colleagues at a braai.

The owner of the establishment, Caren Harmon, confirmed the events that transpired before Magubane drowned.

Harmon told Express the first incident was not a drowning but that poison was involved.

Mtshali could not confirm this. “We are still waiting for the outcome of the post-mortem results, which will take a while.”

He said once the results were ready, any new findings would be disclosed.
