OR Tambo Airport awards its best

The Feather Awards are based on independent surveys of passengers and other airport users.

OR Tambo International Airport honoured service providers and stakeholders who helped ensure it retains its status as Africa’s largest airport and regional hub on December 5 in Sandton.

The annual Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) Feather Awards are based on independent surveys of passengers and other airport users. About 38 000 people work in and around the airport across the spectrum of airport service providers, including airlines, cargo operators, retail, car hire, security, law enforcement agencies, hotels, ground handlers and community-based non-profit organisations.

The City Manager of Ekurhuleni, Dr Imogen Mashazi, delivered the welcome address and said: “The City of Ekurhuleni is proud to have such a remarkable national asset located in its region and pledges strong collaboration to realise the aerotropolis concept in partnership with OR Tambo International Airport.”

Bongiwe Pityi-Vokwana, general manager of OR Tambo International Airport, stated the best airports do much more than get passengers and flights in and out. For the airport, it really is all about the passenger experience. 2019 has had its challenges, but they still managed to pull through to sustain and grow their business. They have seen new routes and traffic developments that have boosted their contribution to the SA economy.

“But a large airport such as ours is a complex place where we manage volumes, variability, variety and visibility all day long. We also note the importance and the urgency of infrastructure enhancement to ensure we offer world-class facilities to travellers,” said Pityi-Vokwana.

She says delivering the best service and performance is always a challenge in this kind of live environment where predictability of service is the basis of existence. The airport stakeholders continue to play a crucial role in the traveller’s journey and the entire airport eco-system.

“With so many entities and individuals who do not work directly for the airport, continuous collaboration among everyone is critical. What we all have in common is a determination to do our utmost for customers even when circumstances are challenging. We value your support and partnership,” says Pityi-Vokwana.

“Most importantly, their well-coordinated efforts are seen and felt by airport users, which is why we are so pleased to be able to recognise publicly the achievements of our suppliers, service providers and other stakeholders,” says Pityi-Vokwana.

The name change from ACSA Feather Awards to Airport Excellence Awards was welcomed cheerfully by the stakeholders and guests at the event.
