Impostors have to work for Kempton Park SPCA
Couple found soliciting donations using SPCA name must work 200 hours at the Kempton Park SPCA.
The good heart of Kempton Park SPCA manager, Kira Sparrow, led to no charges being laid against the 40-year-old woman who was caught soliciting donations last week Monday.
The woman was caught red-handed by Sparrow and Charmaine Joubert collecting money using the SPCA name at the Pomona and Highveld roads intersection.
Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, confirmed that although police were summoned to the scene, no case was opened.
“Upon arrival, police were about to arrest her but the SPCA personnel felt pity and requested police not to continue with the case as they were no longer willing to proceed with the matter. The woman was released.”
The woman was with her husband who also admitted to being in on the act of soliciting donations. However, the police explained that the woman was the only one who was to be arrested as she was caught in the act.
Sparrow told Express they opted to rather let the woman and her husband do community service at the society.
“The couple has to work 200 hours each at the SPCA. They started working last week Tuesday and worked really hard but they didn’t return the following day, as it was raining,” said Sparrow.
“It has been raining since and hopefully they will return once the rain stops. We thought it would be better for them to work at the SPCA and to teach them more about the society. We hope that once they are done it will be a lesson learnt and they can educate others going forward.”
Sparrow also said the 200 hours translate to about 14 weeks. Weather permitting, the couple has to report to the local society from Monday to Wednesday and work between 9am and 2.30pm.
