Candle service for Jade-Lee at Peter’s Garden of Lights tonight
A special candlelit remembrance evening for Jade-Lee Morrison will be hosted this week
Peter’s Garden of Lights in Van Riebeeck Park will have a special fundraising evening for the Morrison family on Wednesday evening at 7pm in remembrance of Jade-Lee Morrison who was tragically killed in a car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Residents are invited to join them at 8 Aronskelk Avenue. Assisting with this candlelit remembrance evening are the police, CPF and security companies to raise as much funds as possible for the family in order to assist them with the funeral arrangements.
Peter’s Garden of Lights began originally for the family to celebrate Christmas UK style as they found that the festive season was the time of year when they were most homesick.
“At first it was just for our family and friends to enjoy but as more people heard about it and asked if they could visit and bring their friends we ended up opening the lights to the public,” said Nell.
Three years ago, at the suggestion of one of the visitors, they put out donation boxes as people were asking if they could make a donation towards the lights.
“We decided that it was maybe a good opportunity to collect funds for the community. People have donated clothes, toys and non-perishable grocery items as well as money and this has been handed over each year to our local community forum for them to help the needy.
“Last year we were also able to make a monetary donation to Casa Caritas.”
The family tries to improve on the Christmas theme every year and this year they have two snow machines and a bubble machine for the children to enjoy. In addition to the lights on the roof and in the garden, there is also a winter wonderland area as well as a nativity scene and Santa room.
Enjoy the Christmas music as you walk around the garden. A Christmas movie is also screened for the children and they are offered free popcorn, juice and sweets.
The lights are open every evening from 7pm to 10pm, weather and Eskom permitting, and will be on until December 30, except on Christmas Day.
No entrance fee is payable and donations are purely voluntary.
