EMPD police chief nails suspected drunken driver

A festive season road safety campaign was also staged on the R21 north

Gen Jabulani Mapiyeye, the EMPD police chief, nailed a suspected drunken driver on the Heidelberg/R23 near Tom Jones Road on Friday morning.

According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, the arrest was made at 11.45am. He said Mapiyeye spotted the 25-tear-old Toyota Yaris driver driving inconsiderately. A breathalizer test revealed is alcohol content to be 0.53.

He was handcuffed and marched to Benoni Police Station. Charges of reckless and negligent driving, coupled with driving while under the influence of alcohol, were registered against the motorist.

Meanwhile, between noon and 6pm, on the Albertina Sisulu (R21) freeway north at the Engen 1 Stop, the EMPD social crime prevention unit, City of Ekurhuleni health department, communications and brand management brigade, in conjunction with Kaya FM, staged a festive season road safety campaign.

Pamphlets about career choices and development in metro police, street children, human trafficking, domestic violence and women abuse, safety awareness, child abuse and neglect, road safety, drug and substance abuse, were distributed to pedestrians and motorists.

Cute teddy bear dolls and yo-yo, were presented to toddlers found appropriately restrained in car seats and condoms were issued to motorists (including truck drivers), said Mokheseng.

The Chief of Police joined the road block and engaged with motorists. Volunteers checked their blood pressure, glucose, prostate cancer (for males) and cholesterol for free, on site.

City of Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi conducted a radio interview with Kaya FM about the buckle up campaign and drowning and fire tips.

“I would like to wish the City of Ekurhuleni community a peaceful and safe festive season and implore drivers to be considerate at all times and to act in a responsible manner on our roads,” said Mapiyeye.
