Eskom ‘postpone’ load shedding for matric results

The system remains constrained and unpredictable with breakdowns sitting at 13 600MW

Eskom will implement stage 2 load shedding from 1am to 6am tomorrow morning in order to accommodate the release of the matric results.

The results will be available at midnight tonight.

An unexpected outage in many parts of Kempton Park around 7pm, which lasted almost 90 minutes, had many Kemptonians confused.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Eskom said in order to minimise the impact of the load shedding, the blackouts are scheduled at night to maximise electricity availability during working hours.

Owing to a loss of additional generation capacity, emergency reserves had to be extensively utilised to supplement capacity during the day. These now need to be replenished to meet Wednesday’s demand.

The system remains constrained and unpredictable with breakdowns sitting at 13 600MW.

Eskom said in order to give matriculants an opportunity to receive their results, the implementation has been delayed to 1am on Wednesday morning.

“This decision will allow matriculants enough time to make their way home safely,” said Eskom.

“Owing to inadequate maintenance over a number of years, the system remains vulnerable to unplanned outages. We continue to ask consumers to reduce demand as a concerted collective effort can help to avoid or reduce the level of load shedding.”
