Masungulo foundation aims to contribute to the well-being of the youth
Foundation started to improve the lives of young people in schools.
Masungulo ya Rivoningo Foundation is a youth foundation, which was started in November 2019 for the benefit of the youth in Tembisa.
It is the brainchild of Lloyd Hlengani, who was born and raised in Baxa, Tembisa. Hlengani got the support and assistance of five other members and created this foundation to upskill the youth of Tembisa through educational and life skills support. The foundation is targeted at children from the age of six and older.
The educational support programme includes, among others, homework support, literacy programme, and matric preparation and planning.
The life skills programme consists of career guidance, which includes assistance with tertiary applications and tours, and guidance over time management skills, discipline, commitment, responsibility and mentorship. Ultimately, the successful outcome for each participant would mean a well-rounded youth who contributes positively to the community of Tembisa and South Africa as a whole.
Hlengani said since Masungulo is in its infant stages it relies heavily on volunteers and donations from generous people. Masungulo’s model is based on the youth participants fully taking part in the programmes and giving back, which empowers them with some skills in the process.
“The intention is to create a centre where all these activities can take place in Tembisa, making it easily accessible to the learners. The centre would also house other resources including books, which we are currently collecting for the benefit of the youth.
“Masungulo has recently embarked on a book donation drive, collecting fiction and non-fiction books in addition to textbooks.”
Hlengani also said while Masungulo will be officially launched in the first quarter of 2020, it has already hosted a weekend event for the youth, which was held on December 14 to 16, 2019, to introduce the foundation to the community.
“Over 40 participants, between the ages of five to 20, attended the event. The first part of the programme included fun physical activities and games where participants were separated into groups of four, named the Rollercoasters, the Actives, the Strikers and the Funky’s. They then discussed serious topics that affect the youth.
