Man killed in Winnie Mandela Zone 2 trying to prevent robbery

Information suggests the suspects had just cornered a foreign-owned shop owner

The chase is on for the killers of an unarmed man, who was shot and killed trying to prevent a crime from taking place.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning at Winnie Mandela Zone 2.

According to police spokesperson Const Patricia Mgijima who was on the scene when this newspaper arrived, the unknown suspects were trying to rob a foreign-owned business outlet but were somehow seen by the victim.

“Information at our disposal suggests that the suspects had just cornered a foreign-owned shop in the area and had robbed it of an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

And when they were about to leave, one of the neighbours (the victim) saw them and screamed for help,” explained Mgijima.

She further explained that the victim, who was preparing to go to work, was trying to wake other neighbours but it was a little too late as they pounced on him.

“The suspects allegedly pounced on him and shot him. They fled on a Toyota Quantum minibus with invisible registration plates. The victim died instantly,” said Mgijima.

A bystander told this newspaper that this was a second victim killed by a gun in a space of a month.

“It is really sad and painful what has happened here. In our eyes, this man has died a hero trying to prevent a crime. We really need such people in our communities who will stand up against crime. What is also sad is the fact that this is the second person killed by a gun in this very same street. We recently buried one of our neighbours who shot and killed himself. Maybe we need religious people and traditional healers to come and cleanse this section, especially this street,” said the bystander.

Mgijima appealed to the community at large to come forward and assist the police with any information that may lead to the arrest of these suspects.
