Update: MMC gives feedback on water repairs and maintenance work

According to City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), the majority of repairs and maintenance work at five sites, which resulted in water supply shutdown, have been completed.

Several Kempton Park residents have in recent weeks expressed their grievances as a result of water supply interruptions.

According to City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), the majority of repairs and maintenance work at five sites, which resulted in water supply shutdown, have been completed.

“The outstanding repairs are minor issues that will not impact on water supply,” said CoE spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The MMC for Water and Sanitation, Clr Tiisetso Nketle, said during the shutdown, technicians located and replaced four valves in the chamber at the corner of Barbara Road and Trek Street.

“The operation to replace a 600mm, two 500mm and one 400mm diameter valves presented a number of challenges that caused a delay in restoration of water supply to areas, such as Bonaero Park, Pomona, Isando and Croydon,” said Nketle.

“Technicians completed work at this site on July 11 and water supply was restored shortly afterwards.

“The operation at the corner of Barbara and Isando roads involved the installation of a 600mm diameter valve on the main water supply pipe into the Isando reservoir.

“The work at this site went more smoothly and was completed on July 9,” said Nketle.

The installation of a pressure reducing valve (PRV) at the corner of Kelvin and Western streets in Spartan involved assembling several components.

“The work was completed within the estimated time and water supply to Spartan, Kempton Park CBD, Aston Manor, Allan Groove, Glen Marais and Bredell was restored. Unfortunately, the assembled components buckled under pressure. The team returned to site and completed the work.”

The operation at the corner of Isando Road and Foundry Street was twofold – to repair a leak on the pipeline crossing Isando Road from Supa Quick to the Isando Reservoir and to replace a faulty valve linked to the inlet of the reservoir.

“The valve installation was completed on schedule; however, technicians are in process of replacing the 1000mm outlet pipe and this work is ongoing.”
