Ward-based war room oversight programme launched in Thembisa

"The programme will run until August 5, targeting different areas in Thembisa, such as malls, schools, taxi ranks, spaza shops and customer care centres."

A ward-based war room oversight programme was launched in Thembisa on July 22, which is a two-week-long oversight initiative.

The initiative will monitor compliance of set regulations aimed at fighting the spread of Covid-19, specifically in hot spots.

Sphelele Nxele, spokesperson for the office of the speaker in Ekurhuleni, said this approach supports government in its effort to curb the infection rate.

“It also augments municipal service delivery responsiveness by readily identifying and responding to operational challenges identified in communities,” said Nxele.

“The programme will run until August 5, targeting different areas in Thembisa, such as malls, schools, taxi ranks, spaza shops and customer care centres.

“Communities are urged to comply with regulations, such as wearing masks and practising social distancing, especially in public areas, such as malls and shopping centres.”

Nxele said communities are urged to comply in settings such as funerals.

She added that families are encouraged to maintain a minimum number of attendees, keep a register of those attending and comply with the times set for funeral proceedings.

“The six pillars of ward-based service delivery, championed through the provincial government, guide this drive,” said Nxele.

“It is led by the health response pillar and closely supported by economic response, law enforcement and compliance, food security, social mobilisation and lastly, state capacity and adaptability,” said Nxele.

She said as the country approaches its peak, it is imperative to minimise the rate of infections, especially in densely populated areas, so lives are both safe and saved.

“This will further enable optimal resource allocation to fight against the pandemic,” said Nxele.
