Glen Marais’ sewer system upgrades explained

As a result of Glen Marais’ water woes over the last month, a concerned resident enquired about the prospect of sewer lines being upgraded due to the number of developments rising in the area.

The resident is of the opinion that despite expansions of big developments, no attempt has been made by the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to upgrade the bulk sewer system that is already overflowing.

Replying on the CoE behalf, spokesperson Themba Gadebe, said that the areas of Glen Marais, Kempton Park and Pomona have several identified projects in this regard.

“The primary aim of these projects is to increase sewer capacity for current and future flows. The strategic intent is to mothball three sewer pump stations namely Blaauwpan, Bonaero Park and Pomona,” Gadebe announced.

The projects are as follows:

  • Bonaero Park sewer pump station to Pomona pump station.
  • Blaauwpan sewer pump station to Pomona pump station.? Pomona pump station rising main to the discharge point at the corner of Fried and Mulder Streets.
  • Pomona pump station to Serengeti pump station.
  • Serengeti pump station to Hartbeesfontein water treatment works.

“Three individual side branches servicing Bredell Agricultural Holdings and Witfontein no 15-IR.Gadebe also outlined a progress report of these projects.

“With regards to the Bonaero Park sewer pump station to Pomona pump station, designs are complete and the EIA and WULA are in place.

“The project is awaiting budget allocation before construction commences and budget will be allocated from 2021/22 financial year.

“The Blaauwpan sewer pump station connected to Pomona pump station project’s designs are complete and the project is awaiting the issuance of the Water Use License. The WULA application is currently at public participation stage.

“The project facilitating Pomona pump station?s rising main to discharge at the point on the corner of Fried and Mulder streets was completed in November 2019 and is working very well. It has relieved the problems around the Pomona pump station greatly.”

He said the Pomona pump station linking to Serengeti pump station project?s designs are complete and the EIA and WULA are in place.

“This project is awaiting budget, to be allocated from 2021/22 financial year which will ensure further construction,” Gadebe explained.

The Serengeti pump station link to Hartbeesfontein water treatment works shows no progress at this stage in this leg of the project.

“Consultants to work on this leg will be assigned from July. The total cost of these projects is R373-million which will be allocated on a medium to long term basis.”

The resident also mentioned a problem in Glen Marais relating to the overflows of manholes.

Gadebe said the sewer blockages along Rockwood and 7th streets in Glen Marais are caused by the old sewer line.

“A solution has been identified which requires the connection of the old line into the new gravity outfall from Glen Marais to Pomona pump station over a distance of 20m. This work will be done over the next two months.”

Gadebe said the bulk infrastructure in Glen Marais varies in age but the average age is 31 years.
