Glen Marais power to be restored by today says CoE

Themba Gadebe, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson, said the source of the power outage is due to vandalism that was inflicted on the mini-substation in Glen Marais Extension 17.

A power outage has left residents surrounding Oewer Street in Glen Marais without power since Sunday afternoon and repairs are expected to be finalised by 11pm on Tuesday.

Themba Gadebe, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson, said the source of the power outage is due to vandalism that was inflicted on the mini-substation in Glen Marais Extension 17.

“A team from the energy department of CoE is on site and busy with repairs. The mini-sub has been vandalised beyond repair,” Gadebe stated on Tuesday.

No details regarding the nature of vandalism were communicated.

According to ward councillor Amanda Davison an oil leak was reported at the mini-substation on August 8, and pointed out that the very same substation “has been burnt out.”

However, Gadebe couldn’t confirm whether the current outage is related to the reported oil leak in August.

A formal query regarding the power outage, vandalism and alleged oil leak was sent to the CoE on Tuesday morning. No formal feedback was received by the time of publishing and updates to follow.
