Two arrested for copper theft worth R100k in Rietvlei Wetlands

Madiga confirmed that an inspector from Prasa came to examine the rolls of copper and established its worth of R100 000.

Two EMPD officials stopped to inspect a bakkie on the corner of Soutpansberg Drive and Georgina Street early on October 9, which led to the recovery of copper worth R100 000 in the Rietvlei wetlands.

According to Sgt Johanna Madiga, the Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, the bakkie was parked with the bonnet open.

“When officers asked the driver what he was doing, the driver said he got stuck. Further investigation led to the loot, believed to be belonging to Prasa.

“The man, however, managed to escape triggering more officers searching the area. Two other suspects were then found hiding in the wetlands and were arrested.

“It is believed that they were about to load the stolen copper onto the bakkie at the time when the officers arrived.”

The detained suspects are Zimbabwean foreign nationals and have been charged with possession of stolen state property.

Madiga confirmed that an inspector from Prasa came to examine the rolls of copper and established its worth of R100 000.

On July 15, copper worth R12 000 was also recovered.
