Operation O Kae Molao led by Gauteng police commissioner bears fruits

“Gauteng residents, including Kempton Park residents, have raised their concerns and I am informing them that I have heard their cries and this is me responding.”

Two liquor outlets were shut down, two suspects were arrested and a vehicle was recovered during the O Kae Molao operation held in Kempton Park last Thursday.

The operation was initiated and led by Lt Gen Elias Mawela, the Gauteng police commissioner.

Kempton Park police, Gauteng police units and EMPD were seen throughout the streets of Kempton Park.

The operation included roadblocks and random stop-and-searches.

“In one of the roadblocks, held on Pretoria Road, a red Toyota Etios with two occupants was stopped. While searching, it was discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen in January from Vlei Street in Glen Marais,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“The two male occupants were arrested on charges of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. Two liquor outlets were shut down for not complying with the Liquor Act.”

The law enforcers were also seen patrolling at the taxi ranks, checking whether taxis were regularly disinfected, drivers and passengers wore masks and sanitisers were available and being used.

“We have rolled up our sleeves and have our boots on the ground to ensure the safety of our communities,” said Mawela.

“This was the beginning, but let it be known that it won’t be the last, we will be patrolling and having such operations throughout the festive season. Gauteng residents, including Kempton Park residents, have raised their concerns and I am informing them that I have heard their cries and this is me responding.”

Although police have committed to ensuring safety, Mawela urged residents to be more vigilant as well.

“It has been a tough year and people probably want to just have fun and relax during this joyous season, but my humble plea is that you are vigilant, careful and not too carefree and careless,” added Mawela.

As part of the operation, an exhibition was held at Kempton Square where pamphlets with informative tips on preventing trio crimes: hijackings, house and business robberies, among others, were distributed.

Various lodges and guesthouses were also visited to ensure that they were complying with the relevant acts and whether they were adhering to the Covid-19 rules and regulations.

Officers parked their vehicles and literally marched to various streets of Kempton Park.
