Limasportsprogramme keeps children active
The programme boasts teams of u-11, u-13, u-15 and u-17 and includes players from across Thembisa, Ivory Park, Klipfontein and Esselen Park.
Local Thembisan youths Derrick Maphoru, Mpho Mabena and Thabiso Radebe have introduced young children to constructive and enjoyable sports participation through various age-appropriate programmes.
Limasportsprogramme offers soccer, netball and chess and the programme is free of charge. The programme is based at Welamlambo sports ground.
Derrick, the coordinator and chairperson of Limasportsprogramme, said the programme is designed to improve children’s motor skills and coordination.
It helps the children in building new friendships, develop confidence and social skills. “Our main aim is to create a healthy and safe space for all children involved. We aim to nurture their talents and also create opportunities to help them build their character and self-esteem within their space which allows them to be more creative.
“We have the chance to identify a gap in our community. Most children in the community engage in activities that demoralise their characters which made us realise that there is a lack of extra-mural activities to keep them busy after school or during school holidays.”
The programme boasts teams of u-11, u-13, u-15 and u-17 and includes players from across Thembisa, Ivory Park, Klipfontein and Esselen Park.

“We have the support from the community, as they always come to watch their children take part. “I got involved with the organisation because I could relate to the township struggles that these children go through. I once played football with no support structure. The organisation is important to me because it helps and provides opportunities for the children and the community.”
The programme is funded by the three founders. “We are still hoping to get support from big brands and businesses.”
