Young Thembisa creative publishes inspirational Sesotho book

A 21-year-old Thembisa creative is inspiring readers with her newly published Sesotho book based on real-life experiences and relatable themes.

At just 21, Dineo Mahlatsi is already making her mark as a multi-talented creative, working as a poet, actress, dancer, rapper, fashion designer and author.

The young Thembisa resident has published a Sesotho book titled Mohabolo wa Padi tsa Sesotho, a collection of short stories aimed at inspiring readers through real-life experiences and relatable themes.

The non-fiction work draws on factual events, personal memories and observations of people, exploring human emotions, struggles and everyday experiences.

“My writing is inspired by real-life situations, memories and the people around me. I want young people to read stories that feel modern and relatable,” said Mahlatsi.

She explained that her writing process is natural and instinctive.

“Whenever I come across a story, I carry it within me before putting it down in my notebook,” she said.

One of the chapters focuses on a young girl struggling with low self-esteem, highlighting how a lack of confidence can lead to missed opportunities and personal setbacks.

Mahlatsi said writing about painful experiences was one of the most challenging aspects of the book.

“The most difficult part was writing about painful lessons, as it brought back difficult memories. But I knew that if I avoided it, the book would not be honest,” she said.

She added that completing the book affirmed her identity as an author.

“Writing this book showed me that I am a real author, not just someone with a dream. I realised that starting with what you have is important. I used to wait for everything to be perfect, but I learned that done is better than perfect,” she said.

Mahlatsi said she has come to realise that everyone has a story to tell, regardless of age, and that language plays a powerful role in shaping and inspiring lives.

“I am not starting something new, I am continuing something that already exists,” she said.

Looking ahead, Mahlatsi has ambitious plans to expand her creative work beyond local platforms.

“This book is just the beginning for me. I want my work to reach global audiences, from books on international shelves to fashion on runways, dance classes filling halls, and acting roles across Mzansi.

“I want to inspire others, especially young people with big dreams, to realise that they don’t have to limit themselves to one path,” she said.

Dineo Mahlatsi releases a book which embodies the languege of Sotho.
