Birch Acres creative captures moments through the lens

The Birch Acres based photographer encourages creatives to make the most with what they have in his story.

Model, creative director and photographer Daveson Tinotenda Sazunga (20) has shared some of the defining moments that shaped his journey into photography.

The Birch Acres-based creative said his passion began in high school, where he would often spend casual days taking photos of people and their outfits.

A turning point came when a friend noticed how much he enjoyed photography and lent him a camera.

“That’s how I started my photography journey in 2022,” he said.

“I find so much value in the ability to freeze time; it’s such a precious moment.”

Tinotenda believes that creating meaningful art does not require expensive equipment and encourages aspiring photographers to make the most of what they have.

“You don’t need a lot to create good art. Use what you have and start where you are,” he said.

He said one of his biggest challenges has been a lack of support, particularly from his family, as well as securing paying clients in the early stages of his career.

“Art is not always easy to understand in a black household. It has taken time, but they are trying,” he said.

As his experience and reputation have grown, Tinotenda said it has become easier to stand firm on his pricing when clients question his rates.

In addition to his photography work, Tinotenda founded East Ties, an event that serves as a platform for creatives in the East Rand to connect, collaborate, and showcase their work.

Originally called East Eyes, the concept was inspired by the region’s abundance of creative talent and the need for a space where artists can share ideas without judgment.

Looking ahead, Tinotenda hopes to grow the event while expanding his own creative scope beyond photography into cinematography, short films and advertising.

He also aspires to become a cultural curator within the industry.
