Suspended security officer arrested for threatening EMPD officers

The security officer will soon appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

The EMPD North Task Team officers apprehended a suspect for pointing a firearm in Kempton Park on January 15.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the officers were doing crime prevention duties when they received a call from a member about a shooting at a training centre on Willow Street, Kempton Park.

The report indicated that one of their security personnel, who had been suspended due to internal issues, allegedly pointed a firearm at another member on the premises and refused to return the company-issued firearm.

The recovered firearm, magazines and ammunition.

On arrival at the scene, the officers approached the security officer, who suddenly drew the firearm, cocked it and pointed it at the officers before immediately lowering the weapon.

Dlamini said the officers drew their firearms and tried to negotiate with the security officer to make his firearm safe because he threatened to shoot himself.

The officers called for backup, and on arrival, a SAPS member distracted the security officer while a North Task Team officer disarmed him.

The 39-year-old was immediately arrested and detained at the Kempton Park Police Station.
