Suspect arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms in Edleen
56-years-old male was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, pointing of a firearm, and handling a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.
Norkem Park SAPS, in collaboration with private security partners, arrested a 56-year-old suspect for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Edleen on March 21, 2026.
According to Norkem Park SAPS Communication Officer Sergeant Portia Mkhondo, the arrest formed part of a community clean-up operation conducted in response to concerns over an increase in housebreaking incidents in the area.
“Members were conducting a community clean-up operation in Edleen following concerns about increased housebreaking incidents,” said Mkhondo.

“During the operation, attention was drawn to a neglected property on Lancelot Street, which was allegedly being used as an entry and escape route by suspects.”
She explained that, after obtaining the property owner’s permission, officers entered the premises where the incident occurred.
“On entry, an adult male pointed a firearm at a police member. The member instructed the suspect to lower the weapon, and he complied,” she said.
The suspect was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was unable to produce a valid firearm licence. Further investigation revealed that the firearm in his possession was registered to another individual.
A subsequent search of the premises, conducted with the suspect’s consent, led to the recovery of multiple firearms and ammunition, including a .22 rifle and a .303 rifle, as well as 309 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, pointing of a firearm, and handling a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. All exhibits were confiscated by the police.
He is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
Norkem Park SAPS station commander, Colonel Nelly Maunatlala, commended the collaboration among SAPS members, private security, and the community in addressing crime hotspots and improving safety in the area.
