Modelling has no boundaries for Thembisa beauty queen
“Pageants embrace diversity, align with social justice causes and encourage stepping out of one’s comfort zone.”
Kamogelo Chantel Matinketsa (20) was born in Thembisa’s Mashemong Section and now lives in Norkem Park, Kempton Park.
Growing up, she watched pageants like Miss SA, Miss Soweto and Miss Africa, which made her realise how these platforms empowered women and helped them become more independent, confident and outspoken.
Inspired by these women’s impact on their communities, she envisioned herself following in their footsteps, so she took up a career in pageantry.

She entered her first pageant at 16 in her matric year, 2021.

“Believe me, those in pageants know it is hard to succeed with little to no support. However, I have been fortunate to have my friends and family’s unwavering encouragement, with my mother being my pillar of strength.
“She is always there for me emotionally, campaigns the most for votes and cheers the loudest for me,” she said.
Matinketsa has achieved several milestones that deepened her passion for the industry. Participating in local and national pageants helped develop her confidence, stage presence and public speaking skills.
Working with local designers and other models taught her valuable lessons about teamwork and adaptability.
Her accolades include:
• Miss Teen Joburg City 2021 (first princess);
• Miss Teen Universe SA Top Model 2022;
• Miss Winter Angels SA 2023;
• Miss Africa SA 2025.
“The challenges of the Miss Africa 2025 competition include navigating the pressure of representing my country and embodying SA’s diverse cultures while staying true to myself,” she explained.
“The financial burden has been overwhelming, with costs piling up for pageant attire, travel expenses and other necessities.

Despite my best efforts, I have struggled to secure sponsors and donors, leaving me to bear most of these costs.”
This experience has exposed her to the harsh realities of the industry, where financial constraints can make or break a contestant’s chances of success.
Through it all, she has realised that perseverance, resilience and determination are as essential as physical beauty and charm.
“Common challenges faced by pageant models include maintaining physical and mental well-being when under pressure and scrutiny.
“Another challenge is balancing school or work with the demanding pageant life and other aspects of personal life.
“I overcome these obstacles by prioritising self-care, blocking negativity and maintaining a strong support structure.”
Reflecting on her journey, she felt more established in 2024 than the previous year.
Gaining experience and building a stronger network has allowed her to be more selective about the projects and pageants she takes on, choosing those that align with her values.
“The core element connecting me to modelling is my passion for empowerment and self-expression. Pageants are about more than just physical beauty; they embrace diversity, align with social justice causes and encourage stepping out of one’s comfort zone.”
To those who doubt their dreams, she offers this advice,
“Feeling uncertain is normal, but do not let fear hold you back. The regret of not trying is far greater than the fear of failure because failure is part of the process.
“Lastly, a goal without a plan is just a dream. It is vital to have a plan, consistently work hard and smart and never give up.”With determination and a vision for the future, Matinketsa continues to push forward in pageantry, inspiring others to pursue their dreams despite any obstacles.
