The group shared fond recollections of their teachers and the discipline that shaped their school days, some memories fond, others tinged with the strictness of a bygone era.
The spirit of nostalgia filled the hallways of Hoërskool Kempton Park on March 30 as the Class of 1965 reunited to celebrate their 60-year anniversary.
This longstanding group of alumni has made it a tradition to reunite every decade, with their last gathering taking place at the 50-year milestone.
Laughter, music, and shared memories echoed through the school hall as old friends caught up and took a guided tour through the school grounds, sparking vivid recollections of their formative years.

Jan de Bruin described the experience as both humbling and a privilege.
“We are so blessed to be here to celebrate our 60th anniversary,” he said.
“Many of us went to primary school together. To still be able to gather like this is a blessing from the Lord.”
Now living in Heidelberg, De Bruin reflected on his roots in Kempton Park.
“Coming back and remembering our senior years, you start to appreciate school a lot more as you get older,” he said. “It’s lovely to see old friends and relive those memories.”

“We had wonderful teachers back then. It was a very different system, there was discipline and obedience,” said De Bruin.
“You never told your parents if you got a hiding at school, because you’d get another one at home!”
The class of 1965 has produced an impressive array of professionals over the years, including teachers, doctors, lawyers, principals, and athletes.
Elizabeth Gross, another classmate, expressed her joy at reconnecting.

“Some of us have been together since Grade One, so we’re like a family. It’s wonderful to be here today, sharing these memories of our principals and old friends.”
The group reminisced about school concerts, lifelong friendships, and the achievements of their classmates, including those who went on to represent South Africa in sport.
When asked about the current education system, the classmates acknowledged how much has changed, but offered words of encouragement for today’s learners.

“Take each day as it comes, stay positive, and don’t let negative influences pull you down,” said one alum.
“Always have a dream.”
Another added, “Education and dedication are top priorities. It’s easy to get distracted by mobile phones and television, but staying focused is key.”
As the event drew to a close, the classmates expressed their hope of gathering again in another 10 years grateful for the bonds that time has only strengthened.
