Daphne Steyl’s family, including her grandchildren, celebrated her 100th birthday in Glen Marais on April 30.
Born on May 1, 1925, in Victoria West, Daphne is living proof of a life well-lived.
At 19, she began her career as a financial bookkeeper at her church, a role she held for 45 years until her retirement.
Speaking on her behalf, Ian Visser fondly referred to Daphne as his aunt and shared memories during the celebration. He described her as a dedicated worker with firm principles.

“Back in those days, there were no credit cards or loans. Everyone used to ask for salary advances, but Daphne never gave in. She was strict when it came to her job. That’s why they used to call her ‘Tantjie Rookskoeis’,” said Visser.
Visser said Daphne maintained her household alone until just five years ago.
A hardworking woman passionate about needlework, she won several prizes for her craft.
Though she never had children, Daphne became a mother figure to her sister’s children.

Her husband’s passing left a great void, yet she persevered through 45 years of widowhood with strength and grace.
“I’ve never heard her speak badly about anyone,” Visser shared.
“She was close to God and always giving.”
He recalled how Daphne lived in the same flat in Braamfontein for 20 years, working long hours from Monday to Friday to save money for the home she and her husband dreamt of building.

“She taught us all how to save. Even when she was 97, she told me she still saved money every month. I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
Visser described Daphne as cheerful and full of humour in her younger years.

“She always had a happy outlook on life. I think that’s what helped her reach this incredible milestone.”
Six months ago, Daphne moved into Glenrus, an old-age home in Glen Marais, where care and love surround her.
Her two granddaughters, Liané Esterhuizen and Mia Grib, described her as the heart of their family.
“Sunday lunches at grandma’s house were always special. She taught me that hard work brings honourable rewards,” Liané said.
Mia shared similar sentiments.
“I loved spending time with her, just the two of us. I used to bring her a strawberry milkshake on Sundays. She taught me to be kind to others.”

Marianna Esterhuizen, another family member, said they visit Daphne twice a week and support her with everything she needs, from managing finances to buying her creams and accessories.
“She always knows who I am when I walk in,” Marianna said warmly.
“She gives hugs, chats about the past and asks about my mom. It’s a privilege to care for her. I love her to bits.”

The celebration was a tribute to a woman whose love, strength and resilience have shaped generations.
Though she never had children, her nurturing spirit has deeply touched the lives of her extended family.
