Teen entrepreneur finds inspiration and opportunity in Thembisa

Seventeen-year-old Adaeze Bohlokwa Nwanyanwu shares how moving from Lesotho to Thembisa shaped her journey as a young entrepreneur, philanthropist, and aspiring model.

My name is Adaeze Bohlokwa Nwanyanwu, and I’m a 17-year-old girl living in Thembisa.

I moved here in 2025, and even though I haven’t been here long, this vibrant township has already become a special part of my journey.

As a young entrepreneur, philanthropist, and aspiring commercial model, I’ve found Thembisa to be a place overflowing with opportunity, inspiration, and community spirit.

Moving from Lesotho to Thembisa was a big shift. Still, one of my fondest memories is exploring the local markets with my mom, tasting street food, meeting new people, and experiencing the warmth of the community for the first time.

That simple adventure made me fall in love with the township’s energy and flavour.

What I love most about Thembisa is the resilience and friendliness of its people.

There’s a sense of support here; people welcome you, guide you, and help you find your place. It’s a township with heart, and that heart beats loudly.

My favourite place to unwind is a food spot in The Mall of Thembisa. It’s my go-to for great food, relaxation, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you forget the stress of the day.

Whether you want to grab a bite or simply enjoy the vibe, it’s a perfect place to recharge.

A life-changing moment for me was meeting a young entrepreneur who encouraged me to start my own business.

That conversation sparked something powerful, a realisation that the dreams I had were possible. It pushed me to step into the world of entrepreneurship with confidence and purpose.

Like many communities, Thembisa faces unemployment.

Many young people here are talented and full of potential, but lack the skills, training, and opportunities needed to step forward. More youth-focused development programmes could create real change and bring hope to our township.

I am constantly inspired by the community leaders who work tirelessly to uplift Thembisa. Their dedication reminds me that progress begins with ordinary people doing extraordinary things for their community.

If I had to describe Thembisa in three words, they would be vibrant, resilient, and growing.

Many people don’t know that I’m actually really good at photography, it’s something I enjoy and hope to one day use to tell stories, showcase beauty, and capture the spirit of my community.

If I could bring one positive change to Thembisa, it would be to introduce more art and cultural events.

There is so much talent here, and I would love to create platforms where young creatives can shine, express themselves, and be celebrated.

The best advice I’ve ever received came from my mom, who always tells me, “Believe in yourself, and the rest will follow.” Those words guide me every day as I navigate my dreams and challenges.

To me, home means family, comfort, and community, and Thembisa has become a big part of that picture.

It’s a place filled with possibility, kindness, and growth. It’s where I’m building my future, one step at a time.
