Meet the man keeping Thembisa Mile runners safe on race day

Behind the excitement of the Thembisa Mile is route coordinator James Maponyane, whose calm leadership and sharp eye ensure every runner crosses the finish line safely.

Behind every successful race stands a dedicated team ensuring that everything runs smoothly and safely.

For James Maponyane, the marshals and route coordinator for the Thembisa Mile, that responsibility is both a challenge and a calling.

“My main responsibility is to keep an eye out for potential hazards or disruptions and make sure participants and attendees follow the event guidelines,” he explains. “Safety always comes first.”

On race day, James and his team of marshals play a crucial role in keeping runners safe along the route.

“We always encourage runners to obey traffic rules and stay on the dedicated route,” he said.

“It’s also important that they avoid distractions like headphones and always run facing oncoming traffic. Those simple precautions make a big difference.”

Managing a race of this size doesn’t come without its challenges.

“The most difficult part is dealing with motorists who don’t always want to share the road with runners,” he admits.

“But with proper planning, communication, and teamwork, we make it work.”

When unexpected situations arise, James’s calm approach helps keep everything under control.

“In any emergency, the key is to stay calm and assess the immediate risk. Then I communicate clearly with the appropriate people, whether it’s race officials or medical staff, depending on the situation.”

With his steady leadership and commitment to safety, James ensures that runners can focus on what they came to do: give their best and enjoy the spirit of Thembisa Mile.
