ActionSA councillor exposes alleged cemetery brick theft in Kempton Park
A truck driver appeared in court after an oversight inspection uncovered the alleged theft of pavement bricks from Mooifontein Cemetery.
An oversight visit to Mooifontein Cemetery in Kempton Park on May 11 led to the arrest of a truck driver allegedly involved in the theft of pavement bricks from the cemetery.
According to ActionSA PR councillor Caroline Seemela, she witnessed two individuals allegedly stealing pavement bricks at the cemetery and loading them onto a truck.
Following the sighting, she contacted EMPD officials for backup.

On returning to the cemetery, one suspect allegedly fled the scene, leaving behind the truck driver.
During questioning, the driver reportedly explained that he was unaware that a crime was taking place and that his job was only to transport the bricks to customers.
In an attempt to prove his innocence, the driver took Seemela and EMPD officials to the alleged customer.
On arrival, it was allegedly discovered that the customer was a SAPS member.
According to Seemela, she questioned why a law enforcement official would be purchasing allegedly stolen pavement bricks.

The customer reportedly explained that she had been referred by a friend, an EMPD member, and that she was told the bricks were being sold cheaply by a construction company.
Following the interaction, it was reportedly agreed that the driver would expose the alleged law enforcement officials involved in the vandalism and theft of pavement bricks at the cemetery in court.
A case was opened at the Norkem Park Police Station and the driver was arrested.
Seemela expressed disappointment at the current state of cemeteries in Ekurhuleni, saying they are poorly guarded, filled with illegal dumping and not properly maintained.

“What is deeply concerning is the alleged involvement of EMPD and SAPS officials in these criminal activities.
“How is it that law enforcement officials meant to protect our communities are the same people buying stolen goods? ActionSA remains dedicated to tackling crime in Ekurhuleni and we are going to confront this matter head-on,” said Seemela.
The man accused in the matter appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on May 13 on charges of theft and possession of stolen property.
