Nuno strives for change across SA
Earlier this year Nuno completed a 1 350km journey in 57 days from Edenvale to Cape Town.
With 2020 almost at its end, Greenstone resident Nuno Morais met with the NEWS to wrap up his year and talk about his journey to Cape Town.
Earlier this year Nuno completed a 1 350km journey in 57 days from Edenvale to Cape Town.
The plan was to arrive in Cape Town and present a letter of demands and solutions to parliament on behalf of the #ShutSADown movement, which Nuno had partnered up with at the time.
Founder of the movement Morné Swart joined Marais.
“For the first five days I pushed pretty hard and averaged 50km a day, but unfortunately I injured my knee,” said Marais.
“After the injury, I had to take it slower so I started averaging 30km a day. There were days I didn’t feel like getting up but I knew if I didn’t get up the campaign would stall. The hardship of the journey was worth every moment of it.”
Marais said what was heartwarming to see the positive reaction of the community.

“When we arrived in a town total strangers would open their homes to us, people with nothing would offer everything they could,” said Marais.
“I met so many wonderful people along my journey, but it was also sad to see the poverty across our country.”
Marais said he learnt how many people are affected by crime and murders in South Africa.
“What’s happening in our country is terrible. It is scary to hear the stories and that is why I am striving for change.”
Marais said one of the most special moments was arriving in Cape Town and meeting representatives from some of the other activism groups in South Africa and the victims of crime.
“We were just ordinary men sort of thrown into this situation. We were receiving hundreds of messages on a daily basis and some days with all the pressure and everything we couldn’t keep up.”
Although Marais couldn’t go into much detail about his next big project he said he has something big lined up for early next year.
“I have moved on to the next movement and look forward to next year. I believe 2021 will be a good year.”
