Thembisa rugby duo selected for national tournament

The pair will represent the region at the upcoming SARU Inter-Provincial Girls Week, to be held at Queens High School in Johannesburg.

Two young rugby talents from Thembisa, Mpho Tsolele and Smangele Malaza, are proudly flying the local flag high after being selected for the Valke Under-18 Girls team.

The pair will represent the region at the upcoming SARU Inter-Provincial Girls Week, to be held at Queens High School in Johannesburg.

Both learners are in Grade 12 at Thuto Ke Maatla Engineering SOS and have been actively involved in youth rugby development.

Last year, the duo played in the U16 squad, and their continued growth has earned them spots in the U18 team, a step closer to their rugby dreams.

However, their participation in the prestigious tournament hangs in the balance, as they face financial constraints. The girls each need R1 500 to cover costs for the week, and they are appealing to the community for assistance.

“I love rugby and it has given me opportunities that no one else could, especially when it comes to personal and character development. My wish is to continue representing Tembisa, but the money is a lot for my mom,” said Tsolele, who plays both outside and inside centre.

Malaza, who plays as a forward, echoed her teammate’s hopes:

“I’m excited to be part of the U18s again. We were together last year, and now we have another chance. Unfortunately, support and money are a challenge. If Tembisa residents could show ubuntu and support us, even a little will go a long way.”

Their coach, Collen Mabasa, expressed pride in their achievements and urged the community to rally behind them.

“They are truly concerned about missing this opportunity. They have the potential to catch the attention of Springbok junior or university scouts, and with good academic results, even bursary offers may come their way,” said Mabasa.

He added that early development in women’s rugby is crucial:

“Being part of Youth Rugby Week is a big step. Most women only start playing competitively when they’re older, so this experience is a great foundation for their futures.”
