For the past decade, the Lerato Lamola Winter Games have united communities in Ivory Park, offering young footballers a platform to showcase their skills.
The tournament, supported by Ikeja Wifi for the past three years, continues to grow in both attendance and impact.
This year’s edition kicked off on June 14 and is now nearing its climax. Only four teams remain ahead of the eagerly anticipated semi-finals: Marashia FC, Pep Eleven FC, Spain FC, and Mashashane FC.

Each team is now just one win away from the finals and a shot at the top prize.
The quarter-finals took place on June 29 at the packed Lord Khanyile Sports Ground, where eight teams clashed in front of enthusiastic crowds. The atmosphere throughout the tournament has been electric, with attendance peaking every weekend.
The 2025 tournament followed a straight knockout format.
Thirty-two teams from across South Africa, including several from Limpopo, competed for cash prizes, trophies, and potential sponsorship deals.
More than just a competition, the tournament is a platform for young talent to gain exposure and advance their football careers.

“Since our partnership began three years ago, we’ve seen major growth in attendance. That shows we are pulling the numbers and spreading a powerful message to the community,” he said.
Mbulelo added that this year’s turnout has surpassed expectations.

“Normally, the venue is only full during the finals. This year, every weekend has been packed. Local businesses are making a great profit, which is a win for everyone.”
Despite the large crowds, the event has remained peaceful and well-managed.
“The crowd can be hard to control during goal celebrations, but we understand – it’s joy, and that’s what brings us together,” said Mbulelo. “Violence hasn’t been an issue. We’ve got security on board, and the vibe has stayed safe and positive.”
A pathway to the pros
Over the years, the Lerato Lamola Winter Games have helped launch the careers of several players who have gone on to represent top clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Richards Bay FC, Marumo Galaxy, and Kruger United.
Beyond the pitch, the tournament brings life to the township. Families enjoy outdoor entertainment, local food vendors thrive, and the energy of community celebration is felt all around.
