Golden Oldies raise funds at annual Charity Golf Day
The Modderfontein Golden Oldies Community and Hockey Association hosted its annual Charity Golf Day at the Kempton Park Golf Club, raising R150 000 to support local causes and individuals in need.
The Modderfontein Golden Oldies Community and Hockey Association recently hosted its annual Charity Golf Day at the Kempton Park Golf Club, continuing a long-standing tradition of giving back to the community.
For decades, the Golden Oldies (GOs) have taken pride in helping various organisations and individuals in need, with funds raised through this much-anticipated event.
This year’s golf day drew over 124 players and sponsors, who came together to make a meaningful difference.

Each player received a goodie bag, and those attending the prize-giving ceremony walked away with prizes.

Event organiser Shen Reid estimated that this year’s event raised about R150 000.
“We have been raising funds for more than 45 years to support those in need,” said Reid.
“It gives us great satisfaction to know that we can assist, no matter how large or small.”
Reid said the association regularly supports various homes and individuals based on their needs.

In particular, they provide annual financial support to the Gerald Fitzpatrick Home for Destitute Women and Pathways Roodepoort.
Last year, the GOs supported baby Gracey Stanton with assistance valued at around R100 000, and more recently, helped Brendan Murphy, who has since sadly passed away.

Reflecting on the organisation’s long history, Reid said the Golden Oldies were founded in 1978 to give back to the community.
“We decided we needed to give back to those in need. Initially, our focus was on donating wheelchairs to deserving recipients and institutions,” he said.
The first wheelchair donation took place on June 10, 1984, and since then, the group’s charitable efforts have expanded significantly.
Over the past 46 years, they have contributed to numerous individuals and organisations, funding medical expenses, wheelchairs, assistive devices, and other forms of aid.

Reid said the annual golf day continues to play a vital role in enabling their charitable work.
“The value of support we have provided over the years now exceeds R3 million,” he shared.
“We are incredibly proud of this milestone, made possible only through the generosity of our sponsors, donors, and loyal supporters.”
Reid extended his gratitude to all sponsors, players, and the Kempton Park Golf Club for hosting the event.
He encouraged more local companies to get involved by sponsoring holes, making donations, or participating in future golf days to help continue the organisation’s mission of giving back.
