Teeing off in loving memory of golfing icon
'You are forever in our hearts and you are sorely missed. This tee is dedicated in the memory of Derek's years of dedication to the club'

On a cool Saturday morning the Krugersdorp Golf Club opened their brand new T-box, but this time with a difference.
The new T-box on the 9th Hole was built in memory of their long-time friend and golf manager of the club, Derek de Smidt.

Derek worked at the club for over 30 years, beginning in the Pro Shop and eventually becoming the manager, who was extremely proud of everything they had accomplished.
The new T-box was officially opened on Saturday, December 10 with Derek’s wife, Cindy, and their two sons Darin and Ruan all teeing off from the new box. The club also built a memorial bench with a plaque.

“You are forever in our hearts and you are sorely missed. This tee is dedicated in the memory of Derek’s years of dedication to the club,” reads the plaque.
Gregg White, the club captain, also explained that Derek would often sit in that exact spot, watching the course and everything that happened there.
Billy Pollock, the club president, told those in attendance that Derek always said that he wanted to build a T-box in that exact spot.
“He did so much for the club,” Pollock said, and added that is why they decided to build the T-box he always wanted.
Cindy said that she wanted to thank the club members for supporting this initiative and being there to honour the memory of Derek.
