Remembering the man behind the stadium

Former Krugersdorp resident looks back at the legend behind the stadium.

The Bob van Reenen Stadium is known for the role it played in shaping athletes and sports stars in the Krugersdorp area.

A former sprint athlete, who was born and bred in Krugersdorp shares her memories of the stadium and the legacy of coach Bob Van Reenen.

Yvonne Smith tells of her training days under the guidance of Bob van Reenen from 1969 to 1973.

“Because of Bob, I went through to the SA Championships each year for the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints,” recalls Yvonne.

She trained alongside athletes by the names of Orelia van Schalkwyk, Hartie Bothma and Willie Britz back in the days with coach Bob.

Bob saw Yvonne perform during a school athletics meeting when she was in Grade 8 (Standard 6).

After seeing Yvonne run, he approached her parents to ask if they would consider that he train her, as he saw great potential in her.

“Coach Bob van Reenen was infamous for always wearing a jacket with his tie, anxiously walking up and down the field. I will never forget his funny little smile,” an amused Yvonne says in memory of her coach.

Bob used to spoil his top athletes with muscle massages on the Friday night before a championship to ensure all his athletes were in tip-top shape.

“He gave up all his time to train and work with his athletes.”

Bob was like a father to them and even checked up on his champions during the school holidays to see if they were keeping to their training schedules.

“His life was his athletes, and he knew exactly how far to push each athlete to reach their goals.”

Although Bob came across as a strict and tough coach, Yvonne recalls that he was most understanding and supportive on difficult days.

“He always motivated us.”

Even when times were tough, Bob would buy running shoes for his athletes whose parents simply could not afford it at the time.

“The idea that Mogale City may consider renaming the Bob van Reenen stadium is absolutely devastating seeing that coach Bob sacrificed so much of his time and loved his athletes. It would be such a shame.”

The now East London resident will never forget the day she received her Southern Transvaal colours that was handed to her by none other than coach Bob.

“His athletes all adored him and he will never be forgotten. Bob van Reenen – he was such a legend.”
