Rotary Club honours leaders from the community

A tribute function was held to thank and honour several people and organisations for the difference they make in society.

At an annual tribute function that was held at the Golden Age Village recently, the Rotary Club of Krugersdorp awarded and thanked several people and organisations for the role they play in shaping their community.

“This is our opportunity to thank the individuals and the organisations for their contributions,” says Karel du Plessis, President of the Krugersdorp Rotary Club.

He handed over the first award to Dr Dave Jankelowitz. “You are an inspiration to others as you motivate people to make a difference in their community. You are a leader and a pillar of our society,” said Karel while he handed over the Presidential Jubilee Award to Dr Jankelowitz.

“I officially can say that I am a proud Rotarian by handing over this award to you.”

Dirk van der Westhuizen (88) who sadly passed away weeks before he could attend the awards function was awarded the Service to the Community Merit Award.

Karel says that Dirk was very involved with his community and came to the club about three years ago to ask for expertise.

“He was very involved at the Robert Palk Centre (a centre that provides proper meals to less fortunate aged people) and always looked at ways to improve and make the centre better.”

The award will be given to his widow.

A special award that was the catalyst for emotion was handed to Melodie van Brakel, founder of the non-profit organisation Cradle of Hope that looks after abused women and children. Melodie says she was overwhelmed when she heard that she won the Service above Self Award.

“This is a speechless moment for me, I really did not expect to receive this award.”

She commented that the work she is doing had seen many obstacles in the past, but that she was able to overcome every one.

“Doing what I do is my calling. Every time I feel like throwing in the towel I see the children on the street. It makes me realise that I have to work harder to give them a better life.”

Anneas Bolt, a Rotary member commented that the Service above Self Award describes the club in a nutshell.

“It is doing more for others than you normally would have done.”
Several non-profit organisations such as the Cradle of Hope, Salvation Army and the Red Cross received a financial contribution towards their projects.
