Municipalities on the West Rand District resolved on a plan of action towards the establishment of a single city on the West Rand.
“The West Rand District has resolved almost ten years ago that due to a need to strengthen local government and enhance service delivery in our municipalities, we need to consolidate all available resources at our disposal and focus on building a single city that will be viable and provide quality services to all the people on the West Rand and create a strong economy,” says West Rand District Municipal (WRDM) Mayoral spokesperson Refentse Mangope.
“We therefore noted the recommendations by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) on the amalgamation of Randfontein and Westonaria Local Municipalities by 2016.
“Though we will respect any final decision from the MDB regarding their view on how our municipalities would be demarcated going forward to the next local government elections in 2016, our municipalities on the West Rand would continue to engage the board until our strategic vision is realised whether it is in 2016 or 2021.
“All our municipalities on the West Rand are committed to realising this objective and we will continue to work together in ensuring that shared services are implemented on the following key areas of function – regional supply chain management, human resources and corporate services, local economic development and financial management systems.
“We will kick-start the process of renaming the West Rand District Municipality to reflect the proper historical and economic character of our district and we call on our communities to participate in this renaming.”
