The West Rand District Municipalities in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs held a one-day governance summit to among others assess and take stock of the work that has been undertaken and the challenges they continue to face in the delivery of services to communities.
The summit was held on 28 June in Merafong Civic Centre and was attended by more than 400 representatives from community organisations, churches, youth, civic movement, ward committees and councillors.
The MEC of Local Government and Traditional Affairs in Gauteng, Ntombi Mekgwe presented key objectives of the regional summit by outlining the need to strengthen forms of communication and engagement between government and community organisations and raise the profile of the work government and communities continue to undertake in various communities.
The summit acknowledged improvements and confirmed positive signs in the municipalities, even to the extent that they appreciated weaknesses in Westonaria and Randfontein Local Municipalities.
They resolved to focus particularly on the following key performance areas:
• Infrastructure and service delivery provision
• Good governance, public participation and integrated governance relations
• Financial management and viability and local economic development
Central to these resolutions, they agreed to enhance a strong partnership with their communities in advancing service delivery.
