A first for Mogale

By-law offenders will face charges in the newly launched municipal court.

The Mogale City Local Municipality has launched the first municipal court on the West Rand on 9 October, focusing specifically on by-law offenders.

The municipal court, the fourth of its kind in Gauteng, will give teeth to the municipal-law enforcement agencies as transgressors will face charges that among others, range from illegal dumping, traffic violations, illegal signs to unlicensed trade.

Nkosana Zali, Mogale City Local Municipality’s spokesperson says that the court also will provide relief to the local magisterial courts because the roll is always clogged, resulting in municipal cases being struck off the roll because of delays and other administrative challenges.

The Department of Justice has appointed a magistrate and prosecutor for the court.

Calvin Koketso Seerane, the Mogale City Executive Mayor says that lawlessness around the city needs to be clamped down on to maintain a leading position among the most livable cities in Gauteng.

“We need to ensure that the property we hold in trust on behalf of the people is protected for posterity, therefore this institution will be more than handy in the quest to achieve our objectives.”
