Bank robber escapes from police custody

A bank robber is at large after escaping from police custody.

A male suspect linked to a robbery at Nedbank in Krugersdorp is currently at large.

The suspect was set to appear in court on Monday 14 October after he was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The suspect was detained in Soweto after being arrested for a separate incident in Jabulani,” says Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Thepiso Mashale.

Krugersdorp police is on the lookout for the suspect after video footage linked him to a robbery at Nedbank in Krugersdorp on Monday 7 October.

According to Mashale, the suspect escaped police custody between the police station and the court in Soweto.

The suspect was supposed to be brought back to Krugersdorp after his appearance.

Mashale comments that it is unclear how the suspect escaped but that an internal investigation being conducted into the matter.

Mashale explains that the suspect and two accomplices entered the bank pretending to be clients.

“The wanted suspect pulled out a firearm during a transaction between a teller and a client and demanded the money,” she says.

“The client handed over the money and the suspect left the bank. He escaped in a getaway vehicle that was waiting outside.”

“No shots were fired and no one was injured.”

The group of men fled the scene.
