Assaulted with shambok: house robber dies

A house-breaking suspect dies after community takes the law into their own hands.

A Mindalore homeowner is being charged with murder following an alleged attempt to take the law into his own hands during an attempted robbery at his home in Adam Street.

According to Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Tshepiso Mashale, the homeowner came across a suspected house robber who allegedly attempted to gain access to his house.

“The suspect attempted to flee on foot but the homeowner caught up with him further down the street. Members of the community noticed the hubbub and came out in large numbers. They continued to harass the alleged house-breaking suspect and even assaulted him with a shambok,” she says.

Police and emergency response teams later were called to scene.

“When paramedics arrived the suspect was declared dead on scene.”

The homeowner was arrested and detained for murder at the Krugersdorp SAPS and appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 31 October.

However, the case was not enrolled at the court. Investigations were suspended and the man was released.

The Krugersdorp SAPS appeals to the community not to take the law into their own hands and calls on victims of crime to contact the police when apprehending a suspect.
