Rapist sentenced to 45 years – detective commended

A man's fingerprints linked him to various crimes in the Krugersdorp area.

A Krugersdorp man was sentenced to 45 years in prison for raping a woman, breaking into another’s house and robbing a third woman of her belongings.

Seun Joseph Motaung was found guilty on charges of rape, house breaking with the intent to rob, and robbery with aggravating circumstances after appearing in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 28 August.

The court sentenced Motaung to 15 years respectively on each charge, of which 30 years will be served concurrently.

According to Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale, the accused was arrested for house robbery in Sivewright Street in November 2011 after robbing a 20-year-old woman of her belongings.

“Initially he was arrested for housebreaking and theft, but detectives linked his fingerprints to the other crimes,” says Mashale.

Investigating officer detective Solly Moumakwe was commended for his hard work and commitment to make the sentence possible.

“His innovative approach in conducting the investigation is commended. Long hours of tracing victims and comparing cases resulted in the success of the sentencing. He is an example to the force,” says Mashale.
