A suspected house robber was shot and killed by police in Kenmare after he tried to stab the officers with a knife.

A suspected robber was shot and killed by police in Kenmare on Monday 11 November when he tried to stab a police officer.

Constable Tshepiso Mashale, a police spokesperson says the incident happened when two sector police officers were patrolling the area, looking for suspects responsible for regular house break-ins.

“The police members were called to a housebreaking complaint and upon their arrival they saw an unknown number of people running from the scene.”

She says the police gave chase and managed to spot a suspect who fit the description of a suspect who had fled the scene. “They stopped their vehicle and approached the person, whereby he drew a knife and attempted to stab one of the officers.”

Mashale says a struggle ensued and the suspect continuously tried to stab the police officers, but the bullet-proof vests the officers were wearing prevented him from seriously injuring them.

“When the suspect turned and attacked the female officer, she drew her firearm and fired one shot in the suspect’s direction and he died on the scene.”

Investigators from the Independent Police Investigation Directorate are attending to the incident.

The police is appealing to the community to come forward with any information that they might have with regard to suspects who are committing housebreaking’s in the Krugersdorp area.
