Every year many raging veld and forest fires damage our environment, and it’s dangerous to people and animals too.
“They happen most often in the dry summer months in the Western Cape, and during the winter in the rest of the country,” explains Harry the Hominid, Maropeng’s spokeshominid.
Luckily the country has strong fire-fighting teams that are well trained to extinguish those nasty fires. But it’s still important that every one of us do our bit to help prevent fires, says Harry.
“Prevention is better than cure, remember!”
Here are some useful tips:
• Ask your parents or another adult to light a candle or fire for you. Don’t do it yourself.
• Don’t play with matches or lighters.
• Don’t leave candles or fires burning when no one is around. Rather put out the flames before leaving.
• If you see anyone throwing a cigarette butt on the ground, make sure it is safely put out. A good squish under your shoe will do the trick!
• Keep the contact numbers of your nearest fire station next to your phone and contact them immediately if you see a fire that’s out of control.
