Community-based safety magazine receives recognition from local Rotary club

This magazine is proof of the good service being rendered in our communities."

The Rotary Club of Krugersdorp recently welcomed the editor of Servamus, Annalise Kempen to their weekly meeting.

Servamus, which means to serve, is a community-based safety and security magazine that focuses on the community as a whole, encouraging to fight crime and maintaining security.

The magazine is not linked or affiliated to any security force such as the SAPS, but reports on the good, the bad and the ugly of safety and security.

During the meeting, Annalise summed-up her role as editor of such a unique magazine.

“Most people will think that this magazine is purely for SAPS members. It is not true, subscriptions are open to anyone and everyone concerned with safety and security within their community,” says Annalise.

Out of around 150 000 serving SAPS members, a mere 20 000 are subscribers. This number also includes a few private citizens.

Annalise mentions that this magazine covers all aspects of the community crime fighting initiatives. Themed articles also are written in order to help the reader understand what is being experienced within their community.

“One must remember, community safety and security has so many aspects. This magazine is very educational since its subjects range from legal issues to crime, corruption, policing, children, animals, abuse, poaching and cyber crime.”

She says that the magazine, which comes out once a month, can create great perspective among school pupils, students and those working with a community safety platform.

“Ultimately we at Servamus would like to get the community involved with one another. This magazine is proof of the good service being rendered in our communities.”

After Annalise’s talk the president of the Krugersdorp Rotary, Colin Steyn handed over a certificate of the Rotary Four Way Test to Servamus. In order to receive such an accolade, four points need to be met by the recipient, namely:

• Is it the truth?

• Is it fair to all concerned?

• Will it build better goodwill and friendship?

• Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
