St Ursula’s has grown from strength to strentgh

St Ursula's school is a 110 years old this year.

The St Ursula’s School in Krugersdorp celebrates its 110th year this year and one cannot believe how this school has grown since the Ursuline Sisters started it in 1904.

The school opened its doors in a small single building with twelve boarders and a few pupils.

Today, the school stands as a testimony to the spirit of love and learning that inspired its beginning, says Bev Stewart, spokesperson of the school.

“With classes from Grade RR to Grade 12, and more than 550 pupils, St Ursula’s School continues to progress, while retaining the highest values and standards.”

Bev says that Krugersdorp and its surrounds are, and always will be, associated with St Ursula’s School.

“It is a landmark to many. Over the decades, people have referred to the school as a point of reference, and for many, it is a household name.”

For Sister Diane Granger, St Ursula’s has been home for many years.

“She is an Ursuline nun, was a pupil at St Ursula’s and later spent 23 years as the principal of the school. Sr Diane is still an ever-present source of encouragement and inspiration to the staff and pupils of St Ursula’s.”

Although no longer principal, Sr Diane continues as the Provincial of the Ursulines in Southern Africa.

In 2010 Theresa Venter replaced Sr Diane as the principal of the school.

“For the past four years, Theresa has run the school, and through her gracious ability to recognise and encourage the skills and talents in all of the staff who work with her, she has filled the shoes of our beloved Sr Diane effectively, while adding teaching to her list of duties.”

Theresa is assisted by Reinet Barnard as deputy principal in the High School, and Elize Fouché as the Deputy Principal in the Primary School.

Recently St Ursula’s School opened its High School to boys, starting with Grade 8 last year, and going up into Grade 9 this year.

“Each successive year we will see boys going up into the higher grades, until we have our first matriculating boys in 2017 – the future holds great and exciting things for St Ursula’s School,” concludes Bev.

The school will be having a Bingo evening on 24 March and it promises to be an evening of great entertainment. Anyone who would like to make up a table of eight is welcome to notify the school on 011 953 1078.

The cost of a ticket is R175 per person, which includes a light supper and five Bingo games.

Additional games can be bought, and refreshments will be on sale.

There will be lucky draws and great prizes to be won. For sports lovers, an auction of sports memorabilia will be held.

The school is very excited to be launching the U-Factor talent competition on 27 March and the pupils will enter to participate with elimination rounds taking place throughout February.

The finals will be an evening to remember. An alumni dinner for former pupils will be held on 26 March and alumni who are interested are asked to contact Beverley Stewart on 011 953 1078 for more information.

Tickets will be sold at the school office and alumni are invited to make up tables of their fellow past pupils.
