How to apply for a special vote

An ID document is always required from a voter when casting a vote, whether at the voting station or at their residence.

In the forthcoming General Election, special votes will be available to voters nationwide.

Two categories of special voters will be able to make use of special votes on either 5 or 6 May, the two days before the actual election on Wednesday 7 May.

An application form for a special vote must be completed by the voter. This form must be submitted to the IEC between 7 and 17 April.

DA councillors will assist voters by supplying the application forms and then will submit them to the IEC on their behalf by the cut-off date.

Voters eligible for a special vote are the disabled, sickly, pregnant or aged. They will receive a visit from IEC officials, accompanied by a party agent or agents, either on 5 or 6 May when they will cast their votes at home. They will receive two ballot papers – one for the Province and one for the National Assembly.

Secondly, voters who will be absent from their voting district on the day of the election (7 May), or those representing emergency services or as an election worker also may apply for a special vote by submitting the application form. These voters will be able to cast their votes at the voting station where they are registered on 5 or 6 May.

An ID document is always required from a voter when casting a vote, whether at the voting station or at their residence. It will indicate to the IEC that the voter is registered. A temporary ID will be accepted whereas a driver’s licence or passport are not permitted.

Contact your DA councillor or the West Rand Regional Office of the Democratic Alliance on 011 660 7813 for further assistance.
